Latin Name: Tyto Alba .. meaning white owl.

The Barn Owl is found in nearly every country in the world, except for Polar and Desert Regions.  They can fly almost silently, with wingbeats interrupted by gliding. This enables them to hear the slightest sounds made by rodent prey hidden in deep vegetation while flying up to three metres overhead.

The barn owl’s heart-shaped face collects sound in the same way as human ears. Its hearing is the most sensitive of any creature tested.

Contrary to popular belief, it does not hoot.  It instead produces the characteristic shree scream, ear shattering at close range.

The Barn Owl feeds primarily on small vertebrates, particularly rodents. It’s not uncommon for Barn Owl Chicks in the nest to feed each other. This behaviour is incredibly rare in birds.
